Book Review and Giveaway: Organic Manifesto

I'll admit it. When I am making food choices for my family, I am much more concerned about our health than about the greater good. The more I read, and the more I learn, the more I realize that they are linked. People can't be healthy if the environment isn't. We are all connected. This book helped me see the bigger picture-- what organic means for the earth.

I buy a lot of organic IF. I buy organic IF it's not too much more money. I buy organic IF it's in the budget. I buy organic IF the produce I'm buying is on the dirty dozen list. I'd love to say this book made me see the error of my ways and I will only buy organic from here on out. The truth is, we are on a budget, and there have to be some "ifs" if I am going to stick to it. But I think reading this book and better undertanding the consequences of chemical farming will cause me to think even more about getting that chemically raised food. Maybe if I can't afford it from now on I'll just skip it.

I want to get the message out about organics, so I am giving away a copy of Organic Manifesto by Maria Rodale.

  10. It sounds like a book I need to read. I used to grow an organic garden, but now tend grandchildren. I miss the garden, but I love those hugs and kisses! Come join me for Crock Pot Wednesday whenever you can. I would love to see you there.

  11. I am not convinced that the legal term "organic" should be such a big selling point in our food. Many people associate "organic" with "good for you" and since it costs more, that must be true, right?
I think there are many more factors we should consider when buying food.

  13. I am trying to make healthier choices for my family so I try to buy organic. I've learned that if I want to buy organic milk, fruits, vegetables... I can't afford to buy any junk food! So I guess that is a good thing. :)

  14. @ Tamlynn, I'm not sure if you meant it like this or not- but I am going to take that as an entry for the giveaway!
I kind of leaned that way before reading this book. It bothers me that some packaged, processed foods can be labeled organic. I still don't buy those, but I do see that organic has a much bigger impact on the environment than I had considered.

  15. Right, like a box of organic mac and cheese is still a box of processed stuff. I do understand your point about organic and the environment.

  18. Part of me is afraid to learn more about going organic... sometimes it's nicer to just play dumb and not know about all the terrible things in our food, cosmetics, lotions, etc. But that's not going to do anyone any good in the longrun. So bring on the info!
